My first website went “live” on the net in 1999 and I soon caught the bug into wanting to know the ins and outs of search engine optimisation and the best ways of promoting a website. Over the past couple of years I have been helping other people by offering to share this knowledge and ideas of web promotion. I have to say however that I have been amazed at the short term attitude of most of these people, they are very much people who want the pot of gold today and end up using tactics which are basically a way of cheating their way to the top. Eventually these people are outed and this is when you see them cry into their coffee over at webmasterworld stating how unlucky they are and asking why their site has took a dive in the rankings.

An example I give to people is that if you were saving money to put a deposit down on a house you would do so by saving on a regular basis, well this is what I did anyway. Most people would not contemplate obtaining this money by stealing it from a bank.

Part of the advice I provide people is about the many benefits of article marketing. I am a content creator and I have had over one thousand articles published on ezinearticles – mainly on the subject of the power of one-way links. The internet is always in need of good fresh new unique content and quality articles are likely to be used by webmasters for many years to come. I offer a crazy form of one-way link building service as I produce free unique articles to other people – again I will repeat that word – FOR FREE!

This advice is taken on board but I then get a call or e-mail by some of these people who tell me in an excited voice that they have just purchased a number of private label articles. This as most of us are aware is frowned upon and is basically just an example of my contacts being very very lazy. At times it feels like I am banging my head against a brick wall!

If it is not private label articles it is hidden pages, some dodgy SEO software or by cloaking. The sheer excitement in their voices – people would think that they have just struck gold. At the end of the day promoting a website is the same as everything in life – hard work pays off. But do they listen? Of course they don’t.

So you have a website but you are not happy with the current search engine rankings for its main key phrases. You would like to appoint a web promotion company to help the site to gain higher rankings but you just do not know who you can trust. Does this sound like the predicament you are in? Are you also somebody who would like to gain higher rankings for your websites key phrases? If you have answered yes to one or both of these questions then this article may well be worth a read.

I am a person that has a number of personal and business websites. My first website was uploaded to the net in 1999 and the way that one promotes a website has changed a great deal since then.

At the time when this first site went “live” on the net I knew absolutely nothing about the art of web promotion and search engine optimisation. I naively believed that as long as the site had been designed and built in the correct manner that that would be good enough and that the quality of the content would do the rest. This was unfortunately not the situation.

I paid for various web marketing and search engine optimisations companies who were so called experts in their field. So what was the result of hiring these people and companies? Well let’s just say that the results were less than impressive. This was most disappointing and left a sour taste in the mouth; I had wasted a lot of money on false promises. I know a lot of other people who have had similar negative experiences.

I then went about educating myself on the best ways of promoting a website and ten years down the line believe that I now have an excellent knowledge of web promotion, SEO and link building. The websites that I own are riding high in the search engine rankings and I now also offer a web promotion service that works.

Why are you promoting a web site you are working on? Coming up with the answer to this question is important because this way you’ll have the whole plan in mind when putting together your SEO plan.

Entrepreneur, David Jenyns says, how much traffic do you plan on bring to your website. Have things set up so that you know what to do with the traffic that arrives. Do you need to work on getting more quality backlinks to your website? You need long term and short term goals.

Your making a sizeable investment with your website so don’t cut out writing down your plan because you think it is something that can be overlooked. The better your written plan is, the better results you will obtain when you start to promote your website. Will one income be replacing another? If so, the more planning you have to do.

Many people ask me about outsourcing the jobs I have to another person. Should I outsource or do all the jobs myself. When you are first starting out you should do all the jobs yourself so that you have a better understanding of what to do. Then when you outsource you’ll feel better about the free time you have to do other things. That is why it’s good to write everything down. On your check list, put goals and dates next to each task you want to accomplish.

Figure out the niche you will be working for. Have a good variety of keywords so that you can maximize your potential. Write everything down in an excel spreadsheet. Put the URLs along side each keyword. For the best in promoting a website, set up a blog and put some good content on it. There will be two things you will be doing to promote your website, on page and off page optimization.

Save your best writing for articles that you will be posting on other websites. Put the same quality up on your Web 2.0 sites. Don’t just put anything up for the sake up putting something up because that is spam and search engines don’t like spam.

SEO can be fun and exciting. It’s nice to see your website at the top of the search engines. Make sure when you optimize your website that you put up the best content for the user. There’s nothing worse then going to a website that is disorganized and full of junk.

You can’t just go to your favorite search engine and see what to do or what not to do. They don’t do that. Don’t just get a high ranking for the sake of getting a high ranking. When promoting a website keep the end user in mind. People that surf the internet don’t like looking at overused junk.

When you’re promoting a web site you need to have a system set up, a process and a systematic way to go about things. When you take the time to put together a plan you’ll have big results. This is the real key of promoting a web site. To get the best results, you are going to want to break things down into simple steps.

Entrepreneur, David Jenyns says, the search engines never published an exact method for getting a web site ranked well. There are just some basic fundamentals that you need to follow. Each person has to find out what works best for them, because everyone is different.

Are you going after a big or little niche? This is a question that you want to keep in mind when you are doing your keyword research. Once you figure out what niche you’re going for, make sure that it is something you can handle. Go for the niche with the best possible traffic for the area you are most qualified for. Start out very small and work your way up. Once you have a good firm footing on what you’re going to be doing, you can build your way up from there.

If you already know a lot about a certain topic, then I’d suggest putting that into some sort of a business plan and selling it online. There are many ways you can go about doing this, but going after something or selling something that you know nothing about will be very difficult.

You want to think of the reason why you’re doing this as well. Why are you trying to rank for certain keywords? Some people have a goal of selling something to another person. How is the structure set up? What kind of ad copy are you going to use to get people interested in the product or service you are trying to sell? These are questions you want to take into consideration before promoting your web site.

Most people that put promote a website have some sort of product or service they are going to sell to the public. Just make sure when you do your first testing phases that you keep the person that is going to buy from you in mind. It takes a lot of time promoting a web site and you don’t want to do work that has no value to it.

There are many different ways that you can test to see if someone will buy from you, but this only comes with a well written plan that you split test. Many people don’t take these considerations in mind when promoting a web site, but you should. Don’t under estimate the need to do these important steps. Remember you’re not just building a website for the sake of getting high rankings. You have to keep the end means in the back of your mind when promoting a web site.
